The Light of the Night
Statement of Intent
Brassai is quoted as saying “The light I have at night is magnificent. I prefer it to the natural light. You should come one night to see it.” Nowhere is this more true of than Hong Kong.
At Hong Kong’s latitude day daylight vanishes quickly and most of the year the sun has fully set but 6 pm. However, this just allows the city to be bathed in the abundance I artificial light that Hong Kong has.
I have set out to capture ordinary Hong Kong while it is bathed in this light, originally I was calling the project natural artificial light, but the idea was to capture the city I see on my daily commute, not the tourist/city centre sights with their large neon signs.
